Among the many spectacular firsts in space by the Soviet Union was the first space station, the Salyut 1. Nowadays we take stays aboard a space station for granted. But staying aboard a station is as much as a risk as is any other space flight. As was the case with crew of Soyuz 11/Salyut 1.

The first Soviet space station always had a troubled history. It was originally supposed to be the used by the Soyuz 10 crew, Vladimir Shatalov, Aleksei Yeliseyev and Nikolai Rukavishnikov. But the crew were unable to dock with the space station.

A second attempt would be made two months later by Alexei Leonov, Valeri Kubasov and Pyotr Kolodin, flying Soyuz 11. But just days before launch, a medical examination suggested that Kubasov may have a chest infection. As a result the entire crew were replaced by their backups: Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov (who had previously flown on Soyuz 7) and Viktor Patsayev.

Although the stay aboard Salyut 1 had some highlights, tempers would flare up among the cosmonauts. They had been trained individually, but for very long not as a team. As a result, they didn't get along very well. To make matters worse, the on-board telescope proved useless when the lens cap failed to jettison and a fire broke out aboard that nearly resulted in a station evacuation.

Against all the odds, the Soyuz 11 crew set an endurance record of 23 days. But during the reentry procedure, the pressure equilization value opened prematurely and all the air was sucked out of the capsule and into space.

The Soviets never found out about this until the capsule touched down on earth and they opened the capsule to find the three cosmonauts dead. Attempts to revive the crew failed.

The crew might still be alive today had they been wearing their spacesuits. In the beginning, Soviet Chief Designer Vasily Mishin had rejected the idea of carrying EVA suits, because the Saylut did not carry enough oxygen to re-pressurize the station after venting all the air for such a spacewalk. Ironically a month before launch Mishin had second thoughts, and pushed for a two-man crew with spacesuits. The idea was rejected by Nikolai Kamanin, head of cosmonaut training, on the grounds that the EVA equipment could not be manufactured in time.

Soyuz 11 was a disaster just waiting to happen. Ironically, even though it was the second in-flight fatality by the Soviets, it also set another first in space that I'm sure the Soviets would rather they hadn't set: the first fatalities in space. All other fatalities have occurred either during ground training or at high altitudes in the atmosphere.

Like my Soyuz 1 tribute, this video was particularly hard to pull off. I wanted to use video footage of the crew. But good quality video by the Soviets is extremely hard to come by. All I had was mostly still pictures of all three cosmonauts, and some videos of the crew that I found among Ralph's old video tape collection - the picture quality of which was further tarnished by the fact that I could only play these NTSC format tapes on a PAL format VCR. But if that's what it takes to make sure no astronaut or cosmonaut gets left behind, so be it.

I wish to dedicate this video to the crew of the very tragic Soyuz 11.
