One of the demonstrations offered to students at the National Chimney Sweep Training School in Plainfield, IN was what a flue tile sounds like during a chimney fire. The clay tile is what is found in modern masonry chimney construction. As the flames heat up the inner wall, the outer wall stays at ambient temperature. The rapid difference in temperature creates a thermal shock as illustrates what can occur -- unseen -- in a residential home during a chimney fire. Instructors Bob Priesing and Michael Segerstrom led the demonstration. Listen closely, and you can hear the tornado warning sirens start to alert the area.
