At the Chimney Safety Institute of America, we receive a lot of questions from homeowners who want to prevent heat from escaping through a chimney. The damper is a good place to start. Closing or opening the damper on the fireplace depends on the model and style, but there is a lever that slides either left or right, or forward to backward, sometimes up and down, to open and close it. (If you aren't sure how yours works, use a flashlight to light the way and remember to take note of how yours operates.) Keep in the mind the damper should always be in the open position to allow smoke to escape the fire. After the fireplace handle has cooled down, you can then switch it so the damper is closed and covers the opening to the rest of the chimney, so that heated air in your home won't escape as quickly. Another good idea, if you have glass doors, is to close them completely when the damper being closed. Make sure and review our follow-up video on dampers:
